But the elements that do form diatomic molecules are easy tro find: 1) All the halogens - Group F,Cl,Br and I. 2) the two elements in period 1 immediately to the left of F, that is . Use the periodic table to determine the atomic orbitals that overlap to form the Br2 molecule and the symbol of the noble gas that has the same electron configuration as the electron configuration of each bonded bromine atom.

Diatomic molecules consist of two atoms bonded together. In contrast, monatomic elements consist of single atoms (e.g., Ar, He).
